Advocacy plays a vital role in bringing about change. To prepare for the 2024 Higher Education Advocacy Day, the Coalition for Transforming Higher Education Funding aims to equip advocates with the necessary skills and knowledge to engage with elected officials effectively.
Throughout this page, you will find helpful documents to view and download for speaking with legislators, as well as overviews of the topics we will be advocating for this year.
Dressing the Part of an Advocate
Advocating is a necessary and powerful way to enact change on a micro and macro scale. In addition to crafting your story, it is also crucial to dress the part. Here are a few tips on visually presenting yourself to legislators.
- Dress comfortably. There will be a lot of walking and standing throughout the day-long event, so it is imperative to wear clothing and shoes that you feel comfortable in.
- Dress “Smart Casual.” This level of attire is above ripped jeans and an old t-shirt, but a step down from dressing in a business suit. Below are videos of examples of smart casual attire.
- You’re welcome to bring a backpack with items you will need throughout the day. However, note that you will need to go through security as you enter the state capitol.
