For Illinois to Thrive and its Black Students to Succeed, it Must Center Equity in How It Funds its Public Universities
Right now, the state has an opportunity to transform how it funds Illinois public universities to make sure every student has what they need to persist and complete their degree. Currently, however, 99.5% of state funding is distributed with no system to ensure that happens.
The result? This inequity in funding has contributed to persisting enrollment and completion gaps for Illinois’ Black students as well as students from other historically minoritized groups.
Institutions with more resources are more likely to graduate the students they enroll.
