The Coalition for Transforming Higher Education Funding will hold the first event of its new The Time Is Now: Equitably Funding Our Public Universities series on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Governors State University beginning at 10 a.m.

The event will focus on the vital importance of passing SB 3965, a historic piece of legislation recently proposed by Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford and State Representative Carol Ammons. If passed, SB 3965 will transform the way Illinois funds its higher education system and help more students attend and graduate from Illinois public universities. This new legislation is grounded in adequacy, stability, and equity and is based on the Commission on Equitable Public University Funding’s recommendations.

At the event, expert researchers will share more about the legislation, which seeks to empower universities to drive opportunities for students and communities by providing them with the funding they need to fund the services that impact student success. In addition to the research presentation, there will be a panel discussion including higher education advocates and members of the state legislature.

The Coalition will host additional events regarding the bill throughout the state and will announce more dates and locations in the coming weeks.

Registration for the event at Governors State is now open. Space is limited, so please register as soon as possible if you plan to attend.

The Coalition for Transforming Higher Education Funding is a group of like-minded individuals and organizations across Illinois who believe that by advancing a public university funding model that prioritizes racial and socioeconomic equity, then we will see statewide increases in higher education equity; through better-resourced institutions serving more representative student populations, more resources directed to colleges serving Black, Latinx, low-income, rural and first-generation college students, and increased investment in higher education.
